crystal antlers @ the echo 7.26.11

ps crystal antlers from long beach, ca opened for wu lyf at the echo in los angeles last evening. current members include johnny bell {bass, woodwinds, vocals}, andrew king {guitar}, cora foxx {organ}, kevin stuart {drums}, and damian edwards {percussion}. their music merges psych, garage, lo-fi, prog, and countless other influences creating musical chaos. indeed the crowd were not newcomers as they crashingly sang lyric for lyric with the band. check out their recently released album, "two-way mirror."

wu lyf @ the echo 7.26.11

ps wu lyf ventured from manchester england to play their first u.s. show at the sold out echo in los angeles, ca july 26, 2011. the band's name is an acronym for world united lucifer youth foundation and is made up of "jeau"(joe manning), "lung"(tom mcclung), "elle jaie"(ellery roberts) and "evanse"(evans kati). interest into the mysterious wu lyf has intensified due to nme naming them the band that is likely to define 2011 as well as celebrity tweets by the likes of jay-z. the crowd sang along to all of the obscured lyrics to their debut cd, "go tell fire to the mountain."

dolly parton @ hollywood bowl 7.22.11

{image of dolly found on http://upcoming.yahoo.com/photos/631092}

ps when i read that dolly parton was coming to the hollywood bowl i purchased a ticket right away. what was i to expect going to see a country legend? upon arrival i notice all ages and walks of life were attending. it was amazing to see such a variety of fans. how exciting it was to see dolly parton live! what great joy and love she spreads at her shows. she is a living doll and a comical "lil thang" at that. i found myself giggling at her jokes and stories between songs, like "it is expensive to look this cheap" regarding her plastic surgeries. she tries rapping on stage and then says country and rap produces "crap." pulling off a cover of "stairway to heaven," for her husband was awesome. however, his favorite song sounded more like "stairwell to hell" when sung by his wife, he tells her. go catch her live and have much fun!
ps ps 12901 fans at the hollywood bowl listening to this powerful little bird, dolly parton. i wonder how many she will draw to the bowl this evening?
ps ps ps gotta love that dolly!

matt ramsey covering "time spent in los angeles" by dawes

ps loving this cover!

these days my friends don’t seem to know me
without my suitcase in my hand
where i am standing still
i seem to disappear
but maybe that's how i found you
maybe that's taugh me exactly what i want
maybe meeting you so far away from home
is what makes it all so clear

but you got that special kind of sadness
you got that tragic set of charms [chorus]
that only comes from time spent in los angeles
makes me wanna wrap you in my arms

when people ask me where i come from
to see what that says about man
i only end up giving bad directions
that never lead them there at all
it’s something written in the head lights
is something swimming in my drink
and if i were the moon
it would be exactly where i fall

cause you got that special kind of sadness
you got that tragic set of charms [chorus]
that only comes from time spent in los angeles
makes me wanna wrap you in my arms

i used to think someone would love me
for places i have been
and the dirt i have been gathering
deep beneath my nails
but now i know what i’ve been missing
and i’m going home to make it mine
and i'll be battening the hatches and pulling in the sails.

but you got that special kind of sadness
you got that tragic set of charms [chorus] x2
that only comes from time spent in Los Angeles
makes me wanna wrap you in my arms
